Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated he has informed President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu about the decision to postpone the referendum on the system of governance to ensure Dr. Muizzu completes his term.
President-elect Dr. Muizzu met with Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed yesterday.
Staring the parliament session on Wednesday, Speaker Nasheed said, "Parliament has taken a vote on changing the system of governance and the work is in parliament, but now I, as well as the Democrats who have asked for that vote, want it not to be done at this time. Muizzu's government was formed to carry out work in the presidential system."
Nasheed said Dr. Muizzu stated that they can circle back to the system of governance in due course. Therefore, Nasheed urged the government to allow Dr. Muizz to rule through the presidential system.
He said that he has assured that the parliament will do its due diligence within the system to start president-elect Dr. Muizzu's rule.
