Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on his win in the 2023 Presidential Election.

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lizhin tweeted today that Xi Jinping, President of China sent a congratulation message to Mohamed Muizzu, President-elect of the Maldives, extending warm congratulations & good wishes to him.

"President Xi stresses, China-Maldives friendly exchanges date back to ancient times. China and Maldives are not only good friends of sincerity, mutual trust & mutual assistance, but also good partners for common development & prosperity," the tweet added.

"I attach great importance to the development of China-Maldives relations. I'm ready to work with you to carry forward traditional friendship & deepen practical cooperation so as to promote China-Maldives future-oriented all-round friendly & cooperative partnership with more progress," President Xi said.

Muizzu was the Housing Minister in the first PPM government. Yameen's government has taken loans from China and launched major infrastructure development projects in Maldives. The projects were carried out under Muizzu's supervision.

In the first round of the presidential election, Muizzu won 45.26 percent of the vote. That’s 101,394 votes. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 85,698 votes. That's 38.25 percent. According to the provisional results of the second round, Muizzu received more than 126,850 votes with 53 percent. President Solih received 46 percent. That’s 108,696 votes.
