Speaker Mohamed Nasheed is seeking to re-join MDP, after having left the party over differences of opinion with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Nasheed made the motion in a message to MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail. In the message, Nasheed said he was ready to rejoin the MDP if he had 50 percent support from the MDP National Congress.

Confirming the authenticity of the message, MDP Deputy Chairman Ibrahim Waheed (Ibrey) told One Online today that he received the message while he was with Chairman Fayyaz. The message has now been sent to the MDP National Congress WhatsApp group, but many members are against it, he said.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Nasheed are longtime close friends, but the two differed politically after President Solih came to power. Nasheed has also formed a political party called The Democrats while serving as the MDP president.

He resigned from the MDP in June last year and is working politically against President Solih through his party. Along with Nasheed, many of the MDP leadership also joined The Democrats.
