Former Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon, who is the Vice President of the Maldives National Party (MNP), has joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) today.

Dunya signed up for PPM at a ceremony held in Hulhumale' today as part of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's campaign. Dunya's form was received by AbdulRaheem Abdulla, who is leading the PPM/PNC coalition in the interim.

Dunya served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2008 and State Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2013.. She also served as the Foreign Minister from 2013 to 2016 in the first PPM government. In 2017, she was appointed as the State Minister of Health.

Dunya resigned as Minister of State in 2018 following the arrest of Dunya’s father, Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) leader, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Dunya’s brother Faris Maumoon.

Dunya also played key roles in the country’s climate diplomacy. Under her leadership the Maldives became the Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) at the United Nations and was instrumental in negotiating the 2030 Agenda, the SDGs, and the Paris Agreement in 2015.
