The Democrats have decided not to support any candidate in the second round of the presidential election scheduled for the 30th of this month.

Replying to a question from One Online, The Democrats' presidential candidate, Ilyas Labib, recently said that the party has not been able to come to an agreement as decided by the party's interim council.

Ilyas noted that the interim council had agreed to agree with certain points by a deadline with both PPM/PNC and MDP. However, he noted that while the deadline has passed, neither parties have made any agreements.

“Our proposal to PPM and PNC was to sign a document before the 20th of this month. Our proposal to MDP was to arrange for the parliamentary vote before the 28th of this month and come to an agreement before today (September 20). We couldn't reach an agreement with anyone by the deadline. Our decision is not to support any candidate," Ilyas revealed to One Online.

The Democrats' presidential candidate, Ilyas Labeeb, had submitted a motion to hold a referendum to change the system of the government in the Maldives. Parliament yesterday had accepted the motion and is currently being reviewed by the Whole House Committee.
