The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the protests against First Lady Fazna Ahmed's visit to the Hiyaa area to campaign for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the second round of presidential elections.
PPM/PNC coalition supporters protested against First Lady Fazna and addressed her with abusive language when she arrived at Hiyaa residences.
Condemning the act, HRCM tweeted, "it is the legal right of every candidate to seek support in the elections. As such, it is the responsibility of every individual to respect the electoral rights and campaign activities of the candidates, we call upon them to respect each other's rights and work within the rules and regulations while seeking support for the candidates."
The HRCM has appealed to the people not to indulge in any act which is prejudicial to the dignity and conscience of others while expressing their views and gratitude during political activities and urged political parties and political leaders not to encourage such acts.
