MDP Chairperson and Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has said that the party is in talks with Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, who founded The Democrats, to work together in the second round of the presidential election.
Speaking after MDP national council meeting held on Monday to discuss how to improve the campaign in the second round and carry out the campaign on the basis of the experience gained in the first round, Fayyaz said the first round's results should be taken into account.
"Our people were not able to come out to vote, there were administrative issues that need to be discussed and resolved," he added.
Fayyaz said MDP is in talks with all stakeholders about working together in the second round.
When asked about rumours regarding conditions set by Democrats for Fayyaz to step down as Chairperson and not be included in cabinet, Fayyaz said he had not heard any such.
Fayyaz said that going by the discussions between the two sides so far, president Solih and President Nasheed might be seen together in the second round of elections, which is for the future of the country.
"I don't think the future of the entire country will be taken away because of the personal issues between us, we hope that we can win the election by a big margin, hopefully President Nasheed will follow President Solih," Fayyaz said.
