First round of elections come to a close with no single candidate winning majority, thus leading to second round of voting.

With 8 candidates contesting for presidency, MDP and PNC candidates President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Dr. Mohamed Muiz took majority votes in the first round, with the latter leading with 46 percent votes so far.

The election was carried out with a total of 575 ballot boxes placed in Maldives and abroad. As per the current temporary results, Dr. Muiz has secured 46 percent while President Solih secured 39 percent. Ilyas Labeeb and Umar Naseer secured 7.05 percent each respectively while Qasim Ibrahim secured 2.09 percent.

As per the election regulations, a presidential election can be won with more than 50 per cent of the total votes, and if the number of votes is not received, the results will be declared through a second round of elections.

The Election Commission previously stated that a second round of vote will be held on 30 September if necessary.
