Jumhooree Party (JP)'s presidential candidate and Maamigili constituency MP Qasim Ibrahim has said he will upgrade GDh. Kaadehdhoo Airport.
Qasim made the remarks during his campaign rally at GDh. Thinadhoo on Tuesday night, adding that he will have field work commenced on the project within the next 2-3 months.
"I will start the dredging and excavation process required to construct a runway of 2,800 metres, which can land a wide-body aircraft," Qasim said.
Qasim added that Kaadehdhoo airport was not developed due to the former government taking the project from him. Qasim's pledge for the airport comes in the wake of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's pledge to develop an airport in Thinadhoo if the government is unsuccessful in developing Kaadehdhoo airport.
In 2013, The Kaadedhoo Airport was awarded to Qasim's Villa Air company for 50 years, but in 2017, the ministry cancelled the agreement as Villa Air could not develop Kaadehdhoo Airport as per the agreement.
However, in 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that the deal had been terminated illegally and that Villa Air could sue for damages, but Qasim decided not to sue for damages to his Villa Air.
