Jumhooree Party Parliamentary Group Leader, Abdulla Riyaz has said that this was not the time to change the system of governance in the Maldives, and noted that Agenda 19 did not have any such works included in it.

Riyaz’s statement came following President Nasheed – who was also elected as the MP for Mahchangolhi Central during the Parliamentary Election – had said that the Maldives needed a system of governance, and that he had always been a fan of the Parliamentary System.

President Nasheed had previously worked to bring about a Parliamentary System in the Maldives, as he prefers it over the Presidential System that is currently practiced in the island nation.

“In my view, the system of governance needs to be changed in the Maldives. The President and the party along with all citizens will decide when this change should be brought,” President Nasheed had previously said.

Speaking during a political and current affair show on VTV, Riyaz stressed that the people had voted for Agenda 19, and that there was no room for a debate regarding the system of governance at all.

Riyaz highlighted that even if the system of governance was to be changed, it should be done with due legal procedure and that he would not support anything that was unconstitutional.
