President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to build an airport in R. Dhuvaafaru during his second term.
Addressing a campaign meeting in the island this evening for the presidential elections, he said that while he was visiting the island greeting the islanders, one out of every three people secretly asked for an airport.
He said one of the most important things being done for the development of the country is connecting the islands through transportation. Whether it is by sea and air. He said it was a promise to build an airport near each island, approximately 20 or 30 minutes from each other.
"I have discussed it with the Planning Minister as the sentiments of the people reached me today. I had that discussion with my policy team before I came here. We are not going to say no to your demands," he said.
He said he would discuss the proposal with the Planning Ministry, the policy team and the finance team and asked them not to lose hope. He said he would do everything possible to make it a reality.
The President has decided to develop an airport in Dhuvaafaru, while the airport in the southern part of the atoll will be built in Beriyanfaru.
