The recount of void ballots from the Maamigilli ballot boxes ended in Qasim Ibrahim’s favor, increasing the difference in votes.

Elections Commission had decided to recount the ballots since the number of void ballots were unusually high, which could have altered the results.

Current Maamigilli MP, Qasim Ibrahim won the constituency once again with 1,081 votes initially. After the recount, an additional 64 votes were found to be for Qasim, which brought his total to 1,145. MDP candidate, Ali Ameez came in close at 1,001 votes before the recount. However, the recount added 45 extra votes for him and brought his total to 1,046. Regardless, the difference of votes between Ameez and Qasim had increased after the recount.

With Qasim’s win, JP was able to secure five seats at the Parliamentary Election. MDP made history with a super majority win, marking a historic first for the country.
