Maldives Police Service has urged the public to be vigilant regarding ongoing scams guised as 'Gedhoruverin' scheme.

Police said on Wednesday that cases of fraudulent extortion of money from various people by calling, texting or emailing people claiming to have received flats at different times are being reported to the police.

Police said it is important to get accurate information, be informed about fraudulent techniques and identify scams to avoid such fraudsters. Additionally, 'forex trading' scams are on the rise as well, police said.

According to police, the scams are mainly conducted through Instagram and Facebook. Such scams are carried out by stealing photos from real people's accounts, police said.

Police said there are many such accounts on social media that use commonly used Maldivian names.
