Former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed to High Court for a stay order on the 11-year prison sentence and USD 5 million fine given to him for money laundering and bribery in the leasing of V. Aarah.
Yameen's legal team had previously submitted a letter requesting a stay order which the High Court did not respond to, as the letter was in violation of the court procedures.
A high Court official told 'One' on Tuesday that Yameen's legal team had submitted an appeal for a stay order on Sunday night.
Elections Commission (EC) has rejected Yameen's candidacy citing the prison sentence given to him. EC's decision was upheld by Supreme Court.
