Former President Nasheed and Machangolhi Central MP Elect, Mohamed Nasheed has said that he was not interested for the position of Speaker, and that Aslam makes a great candidate for it.

Speaking to Raajje TV, President Nasheed said that there were many great candidates for the role of Speaker in MDP. He noted that one prime example was the current MP for North Hithadhoo, Mohamed Aslam.

“I’m not interested to be the speaker. But the party has really qualified candidates. We also have ones who have contributed to us for a long time. North Hithadhoo MP, Aslam is one of the best choices for this,” President Nasheed said.

He stressed that a decision will be made after discussions with all MPs and that an MDP member should be nominated for Speaker and Deputy Speaker. He added that even though he does not wish to be the Speaker, he was interested in the ensuring a smooth run of the parliament.

While MDP had racked up the super majority of the Parliament, various sitting MPs were unable to get re elected.
