Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's mother, Fathimath Hassan, has passed away.

Fathimath Hassan is the stepmother of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and grandmother of Velidhoo MP Mohammed Abdullah Shafiq.

She passed away this morning at the Lanka Hospital in Sri Lanka at the age of 86.

She leaves behind five children, including former president Yameen.

At the time of his mother’s death, President Yameen is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for corruption and money laundering.
