Hulhudhoo constituency MP Ilyas Labeeb has confirmed presidential ticket for the upcoming elections with 94.94 percent votes at The Democrats' primary.

The Democrats held voting on Friday between 1400hrs to 1800hrs. With 3,203 people casting votes in the primary, Ilyas won with 3,041 votes. A total of 153 people voted against him in the primary.

Following the primary, former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that Ilyas will win the upcoming presidential elections this year.

Nasheed Tweeted his congratulations to Ilyas on Thursday night, stating that Ilyas will contest in the elections as The Democrats candidate.

According to the party regulations, the presidential candidate of the party has the right to decide their running mate for the elections.

So far, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Jumhooree Party leader and Maamigili constituency MP Qasim Ibrahim and MNP president and Dhangethi constituency MP Mohamed Nazim have submitted their applications to contest in the elections. MRM's president Faris Maumoon is currently gathering signatures for his application.

Opposition candidate former president Abdulla Yameen's candidacy remains doubtful owing to the slow progress of his ongoing appeal of the corruption case at High Court. Yameen has been sentenced for 11 years for money laundering and accepting bribes.
