Maldives Police Service has stated that Kendhikolhudhoo MP Ahmed Amir was arrested for failing to comply with orders to stop at a police check-point.

Addressing a video circulating on social media showing two officers arresting Amir in a violent manner, police officers stopped and arrested Amir around 0055hrs for failing to stop at a check-point, saying obscenities at police, and recklessly driving.

Police added that Amir had refused to answer questions by the police and was taken into custody at Hulhumale Phase II police station.

Police added that Amir's vehicle was towed for reckless driving.
