Opposition PPM/PNC Coalition's presidential candidate former President Abdulla Yameen has signed his candidacy form.

Elections Commission (EC) opened opportunity to nominate candidates for the September 9 presidential election on Sunday.

President Yameen is currently serving a 11-year prison sentence after being convicted of corruption in Aarah lease transaction. He has appealed the verdict in the High Court, which ruled that if he does not win, he will lose his chance to contest the election. The appeal cases in the High Court have also been stalled due to the leave of the judges.

The Progressive Coalition is continuing its campaign despite questions about President Yameen's ability to contest the presidential election. President Yameen’s lawyers went to the Maafushi prison on Sunday to meet him but were unable to meet Yameen as some of the documents brought by the lawyers were not produced.

PPM said in a tweet today that President Yameen has signed the documents to be submitted to the EC and it has been returned to the party office through the Corrections.

Corrections Media Officer Aiminath Yusreen Ahmed told One today that PPM has requested assistance to sign Yameen's candidacy form.
