Maldives National Football Team Coach Francesco Moriero walked out of a press conference today, after having apologised to the Maldivians.
Maldives lost the match against Bangladesh 1-3 today, during the SAFF Championship being held in Bangalore, India. With the result, Maldives faces a tough path to the Semi-Finals as the team will face off against the Lebanese team.
Coach Moriero looked visibly upset while walking into the press conference, which he walked out from shortly after having apologized to the Maldivian people.
The Coach had ignored any other questions by the journalists and had walked out from the press conference despite tries from the manager to keep him there.
Team Manager Abdulla Shibau noted that the behavior was unacceptable and that discussions will be held to take action against the coach and further probe the issue.
Coach Moriero had also refused any interviews with the media before the team had departed to Japan for a training camp ahead of the championship. He has been unfriendly with the media after that as well.
He had also expressed his concern over a lack of a translator at these press conferences.
This marks the first time in 20 years that the Maldives has lost to Bangladesh in a match at the SAFF Championship. The Maldives will face of Lebanon, a historically strong team that will make their path to the Semi-Finals very tough. Maldives, Lebanon and Bangladesh all currently have three points in the Group Stage, where Lebanon will face off Bhutan tonight in another match.
The final group match for the Maldies will be against Lebanon this coming Wednesday.
