President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the five percent of the State budget and 40 percent of income through direct revenue, will go to Councils. He said that an amendment to the Act on Decentralization has been proposed to Parliament by the government to ensure this change.
The President said this while speaking at a ceremony held at the President's Office regarding the 100 day campaign pledges this morning.
He added that one of the biggest priorities of his administration has been to empower local island councils and to run constituencies under a decentralized system. He said that the best means to achieve this is through ensuring local councils are empowered with the authority of the law.
As such President Solih noted that in addition five percent of the State budget, 40 of the rent collected from land and lagoons of local islands will be given to local councils.
