The chance to pursue PhD studies abroad, has been launched under the government loan programs for higher education.
The Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan spoke to the press today, at the inaugural launching of the student loan for higher education program. He said that the loan will be available for any student wishing to pursue higher education in any field. He noted however that the loan scheme for studying abroad targets, providing funding for higher education in fields of study that are not available in Maldives.
Additionally, the Minister reiterated that special opportunities have been reserved for fields of study that are necessary in this country. As such, the Minister noted the fields of psychology, occupational therapy, special education, speech therapy, sports management, renewable green energy as well as the area of culture and heritage. He further said that there is a need to ensure that slots are prioritized for these fields under the government loan scheme.
The opportunity for students currently in progress with their studies abroad have also been opened up under this loan scheme. The Minister declared that students studying abroad who have not completed 50 percent of their programs will also be included in the criteria for higher education loan. Students who have newly commenced their studies abroad will also be given the chance to acquire loans as well.
The Minister noted that the loan repayment is set to begin six months after the arrival of students in the country after completing their studies. Applications for the loan scheme this time can be also be carried out online.
