Parliamentary hopeful for North-Henveiru constituency, Alhan Fahmy has said that the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula as well as the Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed lack political maturity.
Alhan said this while speaking to the press prior to commencing a street cleanup activity conducted as part of his campaign today. He explained the reasoning for Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim stating that the party will endorse candidates of PNC and PPM for Parliamentary elections. Alhan said that JP leader Qasim had decided on the endorsement due to these parties of the Progressive National Coalition agreeing to endorse JP candidates for the election. The Progressive National Coalition consists of current opposition parties, the People’s National Congress (PNC) as well as the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Alhan further reiterated that JP’s decision was influenced by the need to ensure that more Parliamentary seats are acquired under JP. He said that the party had to do so due to MDP, after winning the Presidential election through a coalition involving JP, had decided to run for nearly all constituencies in Parliamentary election.
He said that those that say that they do not support the JP decision to support Progressive National Coalition candidates lack political maturity. Alhan said that be it members of the Cabinet, whether it is Minister Ali waheed or Minister Nahula, the only reason that they do not understand the need for JP to acquire more seats at Parliament is due to lack of political maturity.
The Parliamentary hopeful also noted that these are matters that should not be commented on by members of the Cabinet.
He said that JP is still with the government coalition and that the only difference of opinion is on the topic of Parliamentary constituencies. Alhan said that the reason for coalition not unifying for Parliamentary elections is due to the initiative and efforts of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
He noted that be wishes for the election of a majority that can hold the government accountable and added that this is also the goal of Jumhooree Party. He urged that those occupying Cabinet positions under JP slots should work with party policies within the government.
Alhan also said that these Ministers should not allow Jumhooree Party to be pushed aside. Additionally, he said that the JP is also currently working towards bringing party policies in its agenda and ensuring all efforts toward the proper running of the country, for the benefit of the people. He noted that if these efforts can only be accomplished through joining with PPM, then Jumhooree Party is prepared to work with PPM.
