Minister of Economic Development, Ustaz. Fayyaz Ismail has said that they are considering extending the Gulhifalhu reclamation project to join with Male’ City.

The Minister said this in a Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Parliamentary campaign policy Agenda ‘19 panel discussion held last night regarding “Fahuruveri Aaila” housing scheme. He said that there are many who wish to acquire flats and land in the nearby island of Gulhifalhu. He noted as such, that the government is considering the joining of the island with Male’ through a reclamation project.

Offering assurances that the government prioritizes solving the issue of housing, Minister Fayyaz said that approximately 17000 flats are required to solve the issue of housing. He noted that the construction of these flats will cost around MVR 17 Billion.  

The Minister of Economic Development said that the government is currently working on acquiring funds for this venture.

He reiterated that there are current considerations regarding the development of major atolls as well. As such, he mentioned the possible development of Addu City, Laamu Atoll, Haa Dhaal Atoll, Haa Alif Atoll.

The Minister said that the citizens of these Atolls will then no longer need to come to Male’ after developments in the atolls.
