Parliamentary hopeful on the Jumhooree Party (JP) ticket, for the North-Henveiru constituency, Alhan Fahmy says that he denies any allegations regarding bribery. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had raised charges of bribery against Alhan.
The JP Parliamentary candidate had been summoned to the ACC at 3:00 pm today. Alhan’s summon had to do with his campaign activities, the “Alhan Street Soccer Cup 2019” and chess competition.
The prizes for the competitions were cash prizes. After leaving the ACC, Alhan said that he has been summoned to the Commission for interrogation with allegations that he had bribed constituents with the prizes for the competition.
Alhan said that, taking into account way in which the law concerning bribery has been stated, he strongly denies the charges taken up by the ACC.
He noted that the activities carried out by his campaign had been open to all residents of Male’ and that it was not specific for the members of his constituency. He noted that the prizes for champions in a competition opened for the public cannot be deemed as benefiting a certain individual or organization. Alhan added that since the competition had not been specifically targeted at voters, there is no indication that an unlawful action has taken place.
He said therefore that due to these reasons, he has informed the ACC that he does not accept this investigation by the Commission.
