Prosecutor General (PG)'s Office has said that PG Hussain Shameem will attend Court session as a defence witness for former MP Ahmed Nihan if Criminal Court orders to do so.
PG Office media official, Public Prosecutor Ahmed Shafeeu told 'One' that Criminal Court has accepted PG Shameem's name as a defence witness in the MMPRC corruption case against former MP Nihan.
"PG Shameem will attend court as a defence witness if Criminal Court orders him to do so", Shafeeu said.
Criminal Court accepted PG Shameem's name, together with Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof and former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, as defence witnesses in Nihan's case on 15 September. The Court however, did not accept President Solih and VP Faisal's names as defence witnesses in the case.
Criminal Court also accepted the names of some former and current MP's belonging to PPM as Nihan's defense witnesses. The witnesses include PNC's President Abdul Raheem Abdullah, Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza, former Kelaa MP Ali Arif, former Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau, Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah, and Maafannu Dhekunu MP Abdulla Rifau.
PG Office had formerly stated that investigations have revealed that Nihan took bribes from Adeeb while serving as the Parliament's Finance Committee's chairperson. As such, PG Office stated that Nihan had accepted a cheque of USD 150,000 through SOF Pvt Ltd which was later used to buy a flat from Platinum Residence.
PG Office had further stated in court that Nihan had asked for and accepted bribes from Adeeb on multiple occasions while he served as an MP, including the election of PG in 2014 as well as members of to the Judicial Service Commission.
PG Office had also stated that Nihan took bribes of MVR 650,000 for Adeeb while he served as an MP.
