President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that those who stole the people’s finances will be found and that the law will catch up to them.
The President said this while speaking at campaign event of current MP and Parliamentary hopeful for Addu-Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam.
President Solih said that he assumed the Presidency to bring justice to the deaths and disappearances as well as stolen state finances under the promises of Parliament of integrity. He said as such, that the reason the people voted for him as President is very clear and added that the current government has been working towards fulfilling these pledges since the moment he was elected.
He noted that there are certain difficulties in making the pledges he took to assume the Presidency, a reality. President Solih said on that note, that certain changes need to be bought at Parliament as well. He said that there are challenges to fulfil his Presidential pledges unless a Parliament that supports the government is brought about.
While President Solih has said this, a Bill to empower Presidential Commissions has been stalled at Parliament. The Commissions being empowered by the bill include the Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset recovery as well as the Commission Investigating Disappearances and Unexplained Deaths. Speaker of Parliament Qasim Ibrahim has said yesterday that the Bill is in violation of the Constitution.
While Qasim is also the leader of Jumhooree Party (JP), he has said that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) running for 86 constituencies is in violation of terms of government coalition. Qasim has also announced last night that JP will be joining with the opposition “Progressive National Congress” and facing the Parliamentary elections. The Progressive National Coalition consists of the People’s National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). Qasim said that Jumhooree Party will be endorsing PPM and PNC candidates for any constituency that JP is not campaigning for in Parliamentary elections.
