Speaker of Parliament and leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim has said that he is aware that the current government is exerting influence over the courts of Maldives.

Qasim said this while speaking at campaign event of current MP for Kinbidhoo constituency and Parliamentary hopeful for Thimarafushi constituency Abdulla Riyaz. The JP leader expressed his concern over the current detention of  said that former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He questioned whether the government is not keeping President Yameen in jail under the pretense of not having a hand in anything.

Qasim said that while President Yameen’s detention has been ordered until the trial against him is concluded, there is no cause for it.

He noted that the situation should not be as such and added that efforts should be directed towards rights and justice. Qasim said that the central core of being responsible involves carrying out every action to its fullest. He further suggested that Presidential Solih should assign a Presidential Commission to tackle these issues.
