President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that it is integral that the environment to allow children at the workplace is available for women.

The President said this while speaking at a special event celebrating International Women’s Day in Maafushi today.

He noted that the number of women resigning from their jobs after getting married or becoming mothers is still high. As such, he said that ensuring that an environment i established at the workplace where children can be taken care of, is integral.

President Solih said that government efforts to assist a proud family begins from the moment the child is born into this world.

He said that the tradition of discriminating against women should be destroyed and added that women’s role in all areas should be broadened. As such, the President said that the fraction of female employees at the Civil Service is greater and noted that the educational levels of women are also higher.  

He highlighted that the women in politics are increasingly playing a significant part in moving towards progress.

President Solih said there are many capable women in the Cabinet and various other positions. He said that there is nothing further to say regarding the capability of the women in Parliament.

One of the announcements made during President Solih’s speech on the occasion of International Women’s day involved the announcement of maternity and paternity leave. As such, both men and women of Civil Service will be afforded paid maternity and paternity leave starting from today.
