Former president and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that MDP's Congress is not grounds to promulgate coalition ministers from other parties.

Nasheed made the remarks while expressing his discontent over Minister Mohamed Thorig complimenting Heritage Minister Yumna Maumoon prior to a presentation on the ministry's work.

Minister Thorig had started his presentation saying Minister Yumna sends best wishes to the members of MDP and hopes for a successful Congress for MDP.

Nasheed, who took stage following the presentation, responded that MDP's Congress is not grounds to promulgate coalition ministers from other parties.

"It would be best if we don't promulgate coalition ministers at MDP's Congress. This is a competitive political party. We do not need other party's philosophies at MDP's Congress", Nasheed said.

Nasheed has called for a referendum on the system of governance in the Maldives which multiple members of MDP including Minister Thorig have voiced out against, stating President Solih deserves a second term.
