Speaker of Parliament and former president, Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that Maldives is headed towards debt.
Responding to Finance Minister Ibrahim Amber's comments on increasing GST and TGST to increase state revenue at a press conference held at President's Office on Tuesday, Nasheed messaged MDP's WhatsApp group that Maldives can avoid increasing tax by restructuring debt and decreasing expenses.
Nasheed expressed disappointment stating that the government had not held discussions with MDP over increasing taxes. He added that the government's calculations were inaccurate and that he does accept it. He further added that President Solih was not actively overseeing government decisions.
Nasheed stated that the government should begin discussions with MDP on the economic issues, adding that failure to do so would cost the government the trust of MDP members.
