An inmate serving his sentence at Hulhumale prison has died.

Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) confirmed that Ali Mohamed, 58, from AA. Himandhoo died following respiratory issues. MCS stated that the inmate was transferred to Hulhumale Hospital for medical assistance but passed around 3:30pm this afternoon.

Ali Mohamed was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2020 having been found guilty of sexual assault on a minor.

MSC added that Ali Mohamed's family, Inspector of Correctional Services, Police, Human Rights Commission, and National Integrity Commission were informed on his health conditions as soon as the inmate was transferred to Hulhumale Hospital.
