Speaker of Parliament and former president Mohamed Nasheed has been appointed by Sri Lanka's Prime Minister (PM) Ranil Wickremesinghe to coordinate international relief for Sri Lanka's economic recovery.

PM Ranil and Speaker Nasheed held telephone discussions on Thursday during which Nasheed offered to coordinate international relief for Sri Lanka.

Detailing the conversation between the two leaders, Parliament's Media and Communications Director, Hassan Ziyau, stated that the leaders discussed the current situation in Sri Lanka and PM Ranil requested assistance from Nasheed to secure foreign aid for the island nation.

PM Ranil took to twitter to detail his plans for Sri Lanka's economic recovery and tweeted his acceptance of Nasheed's offer to coordinate relief aid.

President Solih also took to Twitter to welcome Nasheed's appointment to coordinate international relief for Sri Lanka, stating that the Maldives will always stand with Sri Lankans and will support Sri Lanka in every possible way to overcome the difficult times.

Sri Lanka is experiencing its worst economic crisis in recent times, fuelled by the food, fuel, and medicine shortages that have led to great political unrest in the country. Mass protests in Sri Lanka have led to the resignation of former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa. The country continues to experience violence and unrest due to ongoing clashes between citizens and the government.

Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the new PM in the wake of the political unrest to help ease the economic relief in the country. Sri Lanka continues to have international dialogue to secure aid to keep the country's economy afloat.
