President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated on Thursday that he is confident that Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) can secure the 2023 elections with the new MDP Chairperson Fayyaz's expertise and leadership.

President Solih took to Twitter congratulating Fayyaz on winning the MDP elections and becoming the new Chairperson of the Party. He added that Fayyaz is a natural leader and that with his expertise, the presidential elections can be won by MDP.

Minister Fayyaz ran for MDP Chairperson under President Solih's faction and won against MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, who ran under Parliament Speaker and MDP President Mohamed Nasheed's faction.

During his campaign for MDP Chairperson's seat, Minister Fayyaz reiterated his commitment to President Solih's campaign for 2023 presidential elections, stating that he will work towards Solih's re-election as President.

Former President Nasheed had told the media on Saturday that he does not believe President Solih will run for presidency in 2023. President's Office has since responded to Nasheed's media interview stating that there have been no discussions made on whether President Solih will not run in the primary for presidential elections.
