Sri Lankan President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, said on Wednesday that he would appoint a new Prime Minister (PM) and Cabinet this week.
Gotabaya said that the new PM and cabinet will command a majority in the Parliament. He added that he will bring constitutional reforms to grant more power to the parliament.
His statement was made following Sri Lanka's central bank governor's comments on Wednesday that he would quit unless political stability was restored, saying there was no way to stop economic deterioration without political stability.
Meanwhile former president Maithripala Sirisena has submitted three names to the president for consideration for PM.
Violence erupted in Sri Lanka after a month of peaceful protests, leading to the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa. The island nation has been put under a curfew until 17 May, but protests continue on the streets.
