Former Sports Minister of Sri Lanka, Namal Rajapaksa, has told AFP that his father, former Prime Minister (PM) Mahinda Rajapaksa, will not flee country in the wake of the unrest and violence that sparked in the country on Monday.

Mahinda resigned as PM on Monday after peaceful protests took a violent turn when pro-Mahinda supporters attacked protesters, leading to deadly violence across the country.

Mahinda was evacuated from his official residence by military on Monday night and taken to an undisclosed location after protesters breached the fence at Temple Trees, his official residence in Colombo.

With 7 people dead and over 200 injured in the violence that broke out in Sri Lanka on Monday, protests are continuing despite curfew.

Multiple private buses and over 50 residences of politicians and MPS were burnt down overnight, and protesters continue to gather outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's residence calling for his resignation.

Sri Lanka is undergoing its worst economic crisis, with public protests that have spanned over a month, calling for government's resignation over acute food, fuel, and medicine shortages. Multiple citizens have died waiting in fuel queues over the past month.
