Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has stated that there are plans to develop a new 100 tonne canning factory in Felivaru island to combat issues faced by fishermen and develop the fisheries industry.

Minister Fayyaz made this statement while answering questions by Madaveli Constituency MP Hussain Firushan at the Parliement's economic committee session this Tuesday.

Highlighting the low capacity to weigh fish, Minister Fayyaz added that the projects to build ice plants in various atolls will add a 9,500 tonne capacity to storage. As such, an additional 4000 tonne will be developed in Felivaru and Kooddoo, 1000 tonne in Thinadhoo, and 40 tonne in Mulah in the future.

Minister Fayyaz noted that the current canning factory in Felivaru is over 40 years old. As such, there are plans to develop a new 100 tonne canning factory in Felivaru that would operate around the clock.
