Minister of home Affairs, Imran Abdulla, has stated that the prison conditions in the country will be improved before his term ends.

Speaking at the oath taking ceremony for new prison officers, Minister Imran said that since President Solih took office, the government has been working on changing public perspective towards prisons.

Minister Imran highlighted the prison conditions and the difficulties faced by the detainees in his speech, adding that the current administration is working on reforming prison conditions to meet international standards. He said that the prison officers barracks and administrative offices in the prisons were unfit for the stressful work environment, adding that the administration is working on complete reform before the end of the term.

Calling it a national issue that needs to be addressed, Minister Imran said that the administration is providing strategic direction to the Correction Services, to ensure the prison conditions conform with basic human dignity and rights.

Minister Imran further added that the current administration had conducted a prison audit at the start of the term to determine the conditions, and that many improvements have been made in the prisons since. The prison audit will also serve as a record on the conditions and improvements in the prison to the global audiences, Minister Imran stated.
