A man has been discovered dead in the sea near Maafushi Prison. Authorities suspects he was attempting to smuggle contraband in to the prison.

Today, Maldives Police Service said that it was reported at 2:22 a.m. last night that a man was found in the water near Maafushi Prison. Police said that according to the Maafushi Health Center, the man was dead when he was taken to health center.

As the Police continues their investigation, it has been confirmed that the deceased is a 33-year-old local man.

Maldives Correctional Service said has confirmed the discovery of the body to ONE Online and said that they suspect the man died while attempting to swim to prison to smuggle contraband.
