Vice President Faisal Naseem has taken the oath of Presidency since the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has to go into a thyroid surgery in Singapore.
The Vice President took the oath this morning at a ceremony held at the President's Office. This is the first time a Voice President has taken the oath of the Presidency in Maldivian history.
At the ceremony, the oath was read by the Chief of Justice, Ahmed Muuthasim in front of the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Announcing that the Vice President will be filling in for him, President Solih announced on Twitter last night that following the advice of the doctors, he is to go on a thyroid surgery this morning.
"I will be notifying the Parliament and the Vice President, Faisal Naseem will temporarily assume the duties for the duration of my surgery. I look forward to returning to work shortly. Insha Allah. The President said.
Under Article 123-A of the Maldivian Constitution, if the President believe they are temporarily unable to carry out the duties of his office, the Parliament should be informed of the reason in writing and the Vice President would assume the responsibilities of the President.
