Police Board has decided to summon the Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed.
While the Commissioner has been ordered to appear at 2 p.m., it is unclear as to which case this is in regarding.
However, speaking at a press event at Iskandharu Joshi today, Commissioner Hameed said that he is being summoned because some state institutes believe police regulations were violated intentionally without good reason during a recent drug operation in the Male' City area.
He said that it shows the accountability structure within the government. And today, there are many institutions that can openly inquire regarding allegations of misconduct by the police.
This is the first time the Commissioner is being summoned to the Police Board under the new Police Act introduced in December 2020.
The Police Act states that the highest authority of oversight on the Maldives Police Service is the Police Board. And the Commissioner himself would have to respond to any inquiries.
The Police Board consists of two members appointed by the President, two members from the general public and three members with technical expertise.
