Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula has estimated that airport developed at island of Noonu Atoll Maafaru is to opened in either May or June this year.

The Minister said this while speaking on Public Service Media’s (PSM) “Rajje Miadhu” program. She had said that the development of Maafaru airport had faced some delays earlier for various reasons.

Minister Nahula said that the delays had taken place before and during the transitional period of the recent change in government. As such, she said that these delays had led for various works that needed to be completed to remain stalled.

The Minister spoke of the ongoing project under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and said that the company running the project had handed over the project to a sub company.

The Minister had taken the initiative to visit the United Arab Emirates recently in an effort to resolve the issues regarding this delay.

She spoke regarding this visit and said that the purpose of the visit was to ultimately seek a solution to the delay under consultation with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development as well. The Minister added that the government wished to conduct discussions regarding whether it would be better to hand over the contract to another company, given the delays.

Minister Nahula had said that the company had ultimately requested to continue with the project as before.
