A disagreement yesterday between the Vaavu Atoll Thinadhoo Island Council President and the Council's Vice President has turned in to a violent confrontation.

Vice President of the V. Thinadhoo Island Council, Abdulla Zareer told ONE Online today that the Council has not been operating within the law and it has been repeatedly been brought to the attention of the Council President and other Council Members; all who has been turned a deaf ear.

Zareer said that things turned violent yesterday through that discussion after the claims against the Council could not be accepted.

Explaining what had happened, Council's Vice President, Zareer said that "if something is going against the law, it is our responsibility to stop it. And when issues were brought up yesterday, (they) couldn't swallow it and lead to violence. Things got violent better the Council President and I. I was injured both physically and psychologically. I was hit on the ear and somewhere else. I have seen a doctor about it. I too would try to defend myself, no?"

Zareer, who is a member of the MDP, said that it was he who reported the case to the Maldives Police Service and would continue to speak out against it of things are being done outside the law.

Attempts by ONE Online to contact the Thinadhoo Council President Shifaaq Hassan for a comment on the situation has been unsuccessful as he is not answering the calls.

ONE Online has learned that Zareer is an uncle of Shifaaq.

Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service has confirmed that an investigation is underway following a violent confrontation in V. Thinadhoo reported at 3:03 p.m. yesterday and no arrests have been made so far.
