President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the Judges are people that should be held accountable within limits of Constitution.

The President said this during a speech given at the inauguration ceremony marking the new Judicial year 2019. President Solih reiterated that all three powers of the State should be held accountable before its people.

As such, he added that the Constitution clearly states that cases in court should be open to the public. The President said that the opening or closing of court case proceedings is therefore not at the discretion of the Judges.

The President said that these sort of proceedings are a right of the person seeking justice as well as all of the Maldivian society.

President Solih further said that being held accountable consists of supporting constructive criticism.

He noted that the Parliament is an institution that received a lot of criticism. The President said that steering on the right path will be made easier if courts and Judges also support constructive criticism.
