Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Mohamed Rashid has won the By-Election for Komandoo Constituency.

As per the preliminary results, Rashid has won the election with a total of 1401 votes from all the ballot boxes, which totals up to 48.56 per cent of all votes.

His opponent Moosa Fathuhee came in close with 1161 votes with Hannan Idrees trailing behind with 324 votes.

This marks one of the most competitive by-elections in recent history. With the win, MDP once again has 65 seats in the parliament.

The Komandoo seat was left vacant following the death of MP Hussain Waheed on December 14. He died at the age of 53 years in a hospital in Male’ City after a year-long battle with cancer.
