The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Maafushi Prison has exceeded 40.
When the Prison went on high alert on 14 January, only seven officers and four inmates had tested positive for COVID-19.
Media Officer of the Maldives Correctional Service, Aminath Yusreen Ahmed told ONE Online today that five officers and 36 inmates had tested positive as of yesterday.
She said that there are 68 individuals who came in contact with the inmates currently in quarantine and 12 individuals are in quarantine after coming in to contact with the officers at the prison. The total number of cases is currently at 41.
Correctional Services brought the prison to high alert as per the guidelines of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) at 4 p.m. on 14 January 2021.
And as a safety measures until the prison is brought to the normal state, family meetings, lawyer meetings and court hearings are all being conducted online.
