Ministry of Education has announced that ten more schools are in the planning stages of being established in the greater Male’ area.
The Ministry made this announcement at a ceremony revealing the audit report conducted on assessing tools to change all school sessions to one session.
The audit report had revealed that the population of students in schools in Male’, Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’ are greater than the number required to ensure schools are in one session. While schools with 800 to 1000 students can be converted to single sessions, the audit report revealed that with the exception of one school, schools in Male’ consist of more than 1000 students.
The report noted that there are major challenges in teaching and learning as well as carrying out other student activities within these schools due to the vast number of students. As such, audit report has revealed that the schools cannot be managed without establishing ten more schools and providing the necessary resources to convert all schools to one session.
The report highlighted that 288 classrooms, 44 science laboratories, 28 libraries, 42 audio-visual rooms, 52 mess halls, 22 more staff appointments and 10 schools are needed to convert the 62 schools in Male’ to one session. As such, the report showed that the cost of obtaining all these requirements would take MVR 2.38 billion.
Speaking at the audit reveal ceremony, Minister of Education, Dr. Aishath Ali, announced that the concept of the 10 new schools in Male’ will be different.
As such, the Minister reiterated that the new schools are being designed by taking into account the best practice of current single session schools.
The Minister of Education said that the 10 schools will become institutions that students are eager to attend. She added that the 62 schools that have not been converted to a single session, are planned to make the change over the next five years.
