Prosecutor General’s Office has filed three charges of terrorism against Ismail Yafis, 40, H. Lightnight, K. Male’ for threatening Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed on social media.
Public Prosecutor General Ahmed Shafiu said that Yasif is accused of publishing a post on social media professing allegiance to the international terror organization Islamic State and making multiple posts on various social media platforms, where he used to threaten Nasheed since the year 2020.
As such, he has been charged with incitement to terrorism, threatening to carry out an act of terrorism, and supporting a terrorist organization.
Incitement to terrorism carries a sentence of 10-15 years in prison, while threatening to carry out an act of terrorism carries a sentence of 4-6 years in prison, and supporting a terrorist organization carries a sentence of 3-5 years in prison.
He was arrested on September 21, after a post on Facebook was publicized which openly threatened President Nasheed.
Yafis was sentenced to jail twice for contempt of court after his arrest. The second time was during a remand hearing on September 22, when he repeatedly threatened to kill Nasheed.
