Health Protection Agency (HPA) has said that another surge in Covid-19 cases is unlikely, based on the current trends on new cases.

Speaking at a press conference held by the agency today, Epidemiologist Dr. Ibrahim Afzal stated that the number of new cases have decreased significantly compared to before. As such he noted that the average number of daily cases in the capital city is below 25 and that its unlikely that this would increase.

He also added that even though the number of cases have decreased, they are unable to give any further ease in restrictions.

The doctor had also cautioned to be vary about influenza before an outbreak occurs. His statement comes during a time when the number of influenza cases have been increasing.

Dr. Afzal noted that the target of HPA is to administer two doses for the entire vaccine-eligible populations of the Maldives. He added that they will decide on administering booster shots for the entire population once the first goal is reached. He also added that the WHO instruction is to first focus on double vaccination of 90% of the population, and to work on a third booster shot afterwards.

So far 601 people have received the booster shot.
