The suspect in custody in connection to the rape of an 11-year-old girl has been remanded by 30 days.

On the night of 12 October 2021, the rape of an 11-year-old girl by a person in a trusted position was reported to the Maldives Police Service from a northern island. And a suspect was arrested with a Court Order on the night of 16 October.

Media Officer of the Police told ONE Online today that when the suspect was taken to court for their remand hearing, the court remanded the suspect by 30 days and the investigation is underway.

ONE Online has learned that the suspect in custody is a 37-year-old uncle of the victim.

Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services said that they started working on ensuring a safe environment for the child since the case was reported and the child is currently at a safe space.
